You should be well on your way to becoming a high-earning channel, right?
The truth is it depends.

If you’re confused as to why, you might not know enough about how YouTube monetization REALLY works.
You see, the difference isn’t the editing, the voiceover, or even the video length. It all comes down to one thing: the niche.
In this video, I’ll break down how YouTube actually pays creators, why CPM matters, and—most importantly—which niches you should get into and which ones you should avoid at all costs.
Why All Views Are Not Created Equal
Let’s start with the basics.
You’ve probably heard YouTubers talk about their CPM. This is the acronym for “Cost Per Mille,” or cost per 1,000 impressions.
This matters to every single YouTuber, because it’s the number advertisers will look at before deciding what they’re willing to pay to place their ads in front of the people watching your videos.
Remember, YouTube’s ecosystem is funded by advertising. Whatever the advertisers pay, YouTube takes a 45% cut, and creators get the remaining 55%.
But here’s the thing: every viewer isn’t worth the same amount. Therefore, every type of CONTENT isn’t worth the same amount.
Let’s say your channel is all about Fortnite. Your audience is mostly going to be teenagers with minimal income. And if your content is mostly just clips of other people playing, you aren’t providing much value to that audience.
Now, let’s say your channel focuses on investing in video game companies, and your content is all about helping people grow their income by finding valuable IPs and studios.
Suddenly, your audience shifts from broke teens to high-dollar professionals looking to invest. In this case, advertisers will gladly pay a premium to get in front of them.
And there are more ways to earn than just ad revenue. With a good CPM, your channel can benefit from YouTube Premium views, brand sponsorships, affiliate marketing, and even memberships.
But to get the CPM up high enough, you have to have a good NICHE.
The problem? There’s a lot of bad information out there regarding what a good niche IS.

3 Youtube Niches To AVOID
When YouTube influencers talk about great niches, they frequently equate a high number of views with a high income.
But I just proved that that isn’t the case. So, are these people lying or just wrong?
It’s not my job to make accusations, but it is my job to correct them.
Number 1 one niche to avoid: Entertainment.
I’m talking about those funny compilations, daily memes, celebrity gossip, and reaction videos. Sure, they might rack up millions of views, but when it comes to CPM, this niche consistently underperforms.
The primary reason here is that the audience is typically very broad and often very young.
Advertisers don’t like spending big to advertise products to viewers who don’t have money to spend.
Those Family Guy clips with the one-and-a-half-minute runtimes? They may have 4 million views, but they’re lucky to get $1 or $2 CPMs.
After YouTube takes its cut, those channel owners aren’t exactly banking.
So, unless you have viral hits every week, you’ll struggle to earn real income here.
Number 2: we have the Vlogging and Lifestyle niche.
This one seems like a moneymaker because it feels so personal. You’re sharing your life, your routines, and maybe your travels with thousands of people. But the truth is that unless you have it directly tied to a lucrative niche like luxury or finance, most of these channels flop.
Some vlogs within the finance or entrepreneurship spaces perform better. But general lifestyle vlogs? The CPMs are often less than $2.
Number 3: “must avoid” niche in an example: Gaming.
While it’s true that gaming is one of YouTube’s most-watched categories, it’s also one of the lowest-paying. The average CPM sits between $1 and $4. And that’s assuming you’re not using copyrighted content, which could disqualify you from monetization altogether.
Again, the issue here is the AUDIENCE. The sorts of people watching others frag people in Call of Duty just aren’t who advertisers are willing to pay to reach.
So…who is?

We live in a digital world. If you’re going to try and make digital money, why not focus on a digital niche?
I’ve seen firsthand how the software niche can offer YouTube CPMs upwards of $50, $70, and even $100 per 1,000 views.
I know that sounds crazy, but you need to think about WHY.
Most modern software companies utilize business models that provide recurring revenue.
Once they land a customer, they can earn monthly subscription fees in perpetuity. As a result, each customer is extremely valuable—and they’re willing to pay for that value.
Imagine you have a channel focused on reviewing, comparing, or recommending project management tools, CRMs, or email marketing platforms. Chances are, those companies will spend serious money to run ads on your video.
In fact, it’s not uncommon for multiple software advertisers to compete for the same viewer. That competition drives your CPM up.
I follow a channel that focuses on project management. Her videos typically get around half a million views per month. But thanks to the ads from companies like Asana, Monday.com, and ClickUp, she’s earning around $10,000 from ad revenue alone.
Good Youtube Niche #2: Finance
This one should seem like a no-brainer. The reason why so many people don’t base their channels around it is that it takes a lot of brains to discuss it.
I’m talking about the finance niche.
Before this sector took off, there were just a handful of creators out there making $20, $30 CPMs, or more. In some cases, they added up to six figures a week.
So why is finance so lucrative? Well, it’s surprisingly versatile. It includes a wide range of topics, from budgeting, investing, and side hustles to credit cards, real estate, fintech, and more.
All of these attract adult viewers with ACTUAL intent—and advertisers love that.
The downside is that because everyone knows it’s a high CPM gold mine, the market has become quite saturated.
The solution to that? Carve out tighter and tighter niches.
If you want to get into Faceless finance channels, focus on searchable topics with high levels of buzz.

Be creative and post high-quality content, and both the advertisers and viewers will come to you.

Finally, let’s talk about the online business niche.
This includes everything from Amazon FBA and dropshipping to affiliate marketing to YouTube automation.
Software companies like Shopify and email marketing tools are desperate to market to viewers in this niche, as are online educators and people selling courses.
As I mentioned earlier, higher competition between advertisers means more money per view for you.
I’ve personally seen CPMs of $10 to $15 per 1,000 views on standard videos in this niche. But if you’re able to tap into new, unclaimed markets like “growth operating,” you can boost your income exponentially.
Conclusion
If you’ve been struggling to grow or monetize your faceless YouTube channel, chances are your niche is holding you back.
But now you know better.
Don’t make the mistake of equating view counts with EARNINGS, and instead, focus on which channels are actually generating serious income.
